The worlds greatest peer-reviewed newspaper of in/compatible research presents cutting edge in/compatible research in an accessible FREE tabloid format.

The content of the newspaper derives from a Ph.D. workshop and conference held in November 2011, at University of the Arts, Berlin, organised by researchers from Centre for Digital Urban Living in collaboration with transmediale/reSource for transmedial culture and the Vilém Flusser Archive.

The newspaper is also the thematic publication of this years transmediale festival in Berlin, and follows a previous publication of a peer-reviewed newspaper published by Digital Aesthetics Research Centre in 2011, Nyhedsavisen: Public Interfaces.

01 Feb 2012, 17-18:00 the editors Geoff Cox and Christian Ulrik Andersen (Centre for Digital Urban Living) will launch the newspaper at transmediale festival/Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.

The articles addresses how different technologies, their cultures of use, and their conceptualisation at once represent compatibilities and incompatibilities. What happens when such in/compatible phenomena are brought to the fore rather than hidden away in the dark underbelly of digital culture? Is their in/compatibility a threat to stability, connectivity and to the operations of socio-technical systems more broadly? How do these unresolved tensions and paradoxes of media technologies continue to impact experimental artistic imagination and research practices?

The newspaper provides an insight into current research from academics, practitioners, and Ph.D. researchers from an open call. Leading up to the November workshop at University of the Arts, Berlin, and subsequent to it, a blog has been gathering draft articles and discussions, reflecting on the key issues. This collaborative ‘peer-review’ process is further developed during the festival itself, on 01 February, 2012. So, although this may seem like old news in many ways, in terms of research practices, it breaks with some of the current academic conventions of peer-review, academic reputation, and what constitutes proper scholarly activity.

The newspaper partly addresses academia’s increasing demand for publication of academic peer-reviewed journal articles. Perhaps researchers need new visions of how to produce and consume research? In the light of questions such as “how to measure research?” and “what constitutes a knowledge platform?” World of the News addresses the broader context of its own production. These questions are especially important in a situation where the re-organisation of universities across Europe as well as cuts in the cultural sector are being increasingly determined by the market. Unlike education in many countries, the newspaper is FREE.

Professor and DUL researcher Ole Iversen recently contributed to the development of BeArt - a tool for disadvantaged young adults in Ribe art museum. Using iPads and QR codes the users are able to express themselves and create their own artwork. By involving the users in the design process the developers achieved a better understanding regarding needs and abilities of the target group.

Danish description (the CfP) of the workshop can be found on DARC's website here. During this full day of sewing, knitting, coding, soldering and concept development, 15 lucky workshop applicants were invited to inhabit the soon-to-be-opened Digital Design Lab at Aarhus University. Here, several quickly made prototypes showed how one might use soft materials to experiment with current and future life with digital objects.

The workshop will be followed by more workshops in the future as soft materials will be one of several technologies available for experiments in the DD Lab. Furthermore, one or more of the prototypes will be further developed with the aim to integrate them into one of the DUL-events at the upcoming 1700th Century Festival in Aarhus (Danish description of the festival). He is Editor of the open access, online journal, The Fibreculture Journal (digital media + networks + transdisciplinary critique). Andrew’s research examines the productive nature of differential intensity. He works on transformation, crisis and possibility—as these are filtered through generative process in media, arts and philosophy, dynamic modeling of all types, and new forms of cooperation in politics/social organization. He is currently writing a book—Differential Media, Differential Life: the past and future of social organization that rethinks the ‘world as medium’. This diagrams the relations between: media; thinking, feeling and perceiving; Bateson/Guattari’s ‘three ecologies’ of the social, self and environment.
Andrew’s work also draws on electronic arts and design (eg cross signal processing), poststructuralism, process philosophy, ‘speculative pragmatics’ (Massumi), and extended and dynamicist theories of mind. He also works on the new publishing (academic publishing to books, music, journalism), and related events in education and knowledge mobilization and exchange (technics, methods, and new network, information and attentional literacies). Recent publications include: 'Performance as the Distribution of Life: from Aeschylus to Chekhov to VJing via Deleuze and Guattari', ‘Deleuze, Guattari and Neuroscience’ and, with Lone Bertelsen, 'An Ethics of Everyday Infinities and Powers: Félix Guattari on Affect and the Refrain'. He also works with the ‘technologies of lived abstraction’ project at Senselab in Montréal.

In the distant past, he’s worked as a marketing manager and production manager for arts companies, and as a freelance theatre director (e.g. Beckett's shorter plays and Muller's Hamlet-Machine).
