Experiments

thumb_rooms

Rooms

Six brightly coloured rooms shifts in perspective according to the viewing position of one pedestrian on the sidewalk. A white silhuette character follows the position by crawling and jumping through the rooms.

Media >

thumb_sleep

Sleeping woman

The body of a reclining woman is portrayed in full figure across the six screens. As pedestrians walk by she rolls over according to their position on the sidewalk.

Media >

thumb_string

String

A visual experiement on details by combining low resolution video on the LED-screen with high resolution video projected on top of it.

Media >

thumb_earth

Earth

The six screens acting as windows into a view of the earth. A marked zone on the sidewalk enabled users to scroll and zoom the globe by moving from side to side.

Media >

thumb_fisk

Fish

Turning the building into a huge aquarium by adding fish to the screens. One red fish would follow pedestrians walking by.

Media >

thumb_faces

Faces

Six sleeping faces are portrayed along the facade. Each face reacts by screaming at pedestrians when walking by.

Media >

thumb_willfollowyou

WILL FOLLOW YOU

The concept of scrolling marquee signs made interactive. Each line of text follows the movement of pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Media >

thumb_cubes

Cubes

A visual experiment on creating the illusion of a cubic space in each of the six screens.

Media >

thumb_traces

Traces

Pedestrians gets followed by coloured lines and thereby creating traces along the screen. Where colours overlap the colours are blended to makeup additive colours.

Media >

thumb_lightwaves

Light Waves

Three waves move slowly in colours red, green and blue. Where the waves overlap the colours are blended to makeup additive colours.

Media >

thumb_points

Dots

Each pixel on the screen blinks in individual speed creating a pulsating wall off red dots.

Climate on the Wall http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/climate-on-the-wall.php http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/climate-on-the-wall.php

During the climate conference Beyond Kyoto, citizens of Aarhus can engage themselves in the struggle for large-scale climate improvements by using Climate on the Wall, an interactive generator of climate statements that uses Ridehuset, a prominent building in the city centre, as a backdrop.

Colorscan – Colorful Lighting Installation http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/colorscan.php http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/colorscan.php Colorscan is an interactive lighting installation installed in one of the main entry gates to the Skanderborg music festival. A camera is fixed in the gate and scans for and tracks vivid colors , such as a bright red rain-coat, in the entry area and the entire entry gate is then lit up in the selected color. A projector marks and follows the tracked target with a large X so that the audience can follow the scan and start playing and interacting to control the lighting of the gate.

Aarhus by Light – A Playful Media Facade http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/aarhus-by-light.php http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/aarhus-by-light.php Aarhus by Light is a groundbreaking experiment in media facades. As part of the media facades project, Concert Hall Aarhus, one of the largest in Europe, presents a new interactive media facade that invites guests and passers-by to encounter and partake in a new dimension of the renowned cultural institution. Luminous creatures live in the facade. As you approach, you enter their world which is itself part of the city. The creatures are social beings like ourselves, and they enjoy our company - most of the time...

Media Facades http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/media-facades.php http://www.digitalurbanliving.dk/projects/media-facades/media-facades.php The purpose of the Media Facades project is to discuss and develop interactive media facades as integrated parts of the inside and the outside of buildings. The project contributes to new ways of displaying dynamic and interactive content in large scale. The main points of interest in the project are:

  • Spatiality & Architecture
  • Technology & Materials
  • Interaction & Use
  • Genre & Content.

The specific goal is to build up new concepts for interactive media facades in the fields of civic communication, entertainment and digital art, as well as branding and product presentation.

The partners in the Media Facades project are:

  • CAVI - Centre for Advanced Visualization and Interaction, University of Aarhus
  • BIG Bjarke Ingels Group
  • Martin Professional A/S
  • Wall of Pixels
  • The Animation Workshop

The project is primarily funded by the Danish Research & Innovation Administration (Forsknings- & Innovationsstyrelsen) as part of the Regional ICT Corridor program (Den regionale IKT-korridor).

For more information, please contact: Rune Nielsen.

Activities

The activities in the Media Facades project are mainly structured around a series of cases which work as a vehicle to develop concepts and core technologies for new media facades. The concepts are realized as full size projects and prototypes and in a variety of visual representations. Among these cases are contributions to international architectural contests and structured, temporary experiments with technologies and visual expression.

As a fundamental part of the project, new interactive technologies and materials are examined and combined into new interactive proposals for media facades. The technologies range from traditional LED lighting and projections used in new innovative ways to more experimental materials whose visual or mechanical properties can contribute to new media facade concepts.

In addition to the material and case driven work, the project investigates design processes in relation to developing media facades. The research project is concerned with systematic approaches to both designing and constructing media facades – both for practitioners and design researchers. In parallel, a toolbox of software for customizable and generic media facade ideas is being built up to be used in combination with the specific experiences from the cases and the examined properties of new media facade materials.
