Title: Designing interactive technology for engaging spectator experience at sporting events
Abstract: This PhD project explores the methodological challenges of participatory design when designing interactive technology for spectator experiences at sporting event. Spectator experiences at sporting events are a novel an unexplored domain in the research fields of interaction design and participatory design. Therefore, when designing interactive technology for spectator experiences the well-developed work-orientated methodology of participatory design do not address the richness and depth of spectator experiences. The aim of this PhD project is therefore to expand participatory designs toolbox to embrace the new domain of spectator experiences. In order to do so, this research investigates what characterizes engaging spectator experience at sporting event. With a special focus on what makes the spectator experience at the sporting event unique and engaging. Through design experiments this project furthermore explores how interactive technology at sporting events can foster engaging spectator experiences. And lastly, this project aims at developing participatory design techniques that can be carried out in the design process when we are to design meaningful interactive technology for engaging spectator experiences at sporting events.
