Announcing Media Architecture Biennale 2012

We are happy to announce that the second Media Architecture Biennale will be hosted in Aarhus, November 15-17. Building on the successful event in Vienna 2010, The Media Architecture Biennale 2012 brings together artists, academia and industry in the continued exploration of the meeting between architecture and digital media.

With public exhibitions, a conference and a series of workshops, the biennale offers many ways to participate and get involved. See the sections below for more details.

The 2012 biennale will extend the existing format with an academic conference track, new exhibition, awards and industry sessions, as well as a full day of workshops.

MASTER CLASS WITH JOOST SCHREVE

PRESENT AN INNOVATION PROJECT AND GET FEEDBACK FROM A SILICON VALLEY INSIDER

6 individual AU students/teams will get the chance to present an innovation project idea to Joost, e.g. an app, an online forum or service, etc. Each participant will have a 20 min time slot incl. discussion and invites slides and audio/visual material. Everyone is welcome to sit in on the event.

Joost will evaluate the ideas presented, share his experience and offer unique insider's tips on what it takes to make it in the Valley.

Submit an A4 page with an illustration and a presentation of the idea to the @ below no later than Friday, April 13, 2012, 12:00. 6 AU student entries will be selected to present on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 14:15-17:00 in Peter Bøgh Andersen Auditorium, Nygaard Building, Katrinebjerg, Helsingforsgade 14, 8200 Aarhus N.

Originally from the Netherlands, Jooest Schreve has lived in Palo Alto, Silicon Valley since 2004. While studying for his MBA at Stanford Business School, Joost hatched the idea for a new way to share travel experiences online via location aware devices. After 5 years of great heights and deep lows, he successfully sold EveryTrail to TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site. BUILDING A CAREER AS AN ENTREPENEUR IN THE HEART OF SILICON VALLEY

Jooest Schreve moved from his home country the Netherlands to Silicon Valley, California, in 2004. He spent the first two years there studying for his MBA at Stanford Business School in Palo Alto.

During his studies he came up with the idea for a new way to share travel experiences online via location aware devices. Together with a small team of engineers he created Everytrail.com and grew it into the leading online community of its kind. After five years of great highs and deep lows, he successfully sold Everytrail to TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site. He now leads the TripAdvisor City Guide product, and continues to be very excited to be in Silicon Valley, the world's leading innovation center.

In his talk Jooest will address key lessons learned and share his experience on being an entrepeneur in Palo Alto and Silicon Valley.

WORLD OF THE NEWS

The world’s greatest peer-reviewed newspaper of in/compatible research presents cutting edge in/compatible research in an accessible FREE tabloid format.

The content of the newspaper derives from a Ph.D. workshop and conference held in November 2011, at University of the Arts, Berlin, organised by researchers from Centre for Digital Urban Living in collaboration with transmediale/reSource for transmedial culture and the Vilém Flusser Archive.


The newspaper is also the thematic publication of this year’s transmediale festival in Berlin, and follows a previous publication of a peer-reviewed newspaper published by Digital Aesthetics Research Centre in 2011, Nyhedsavisen: Public Interfaces.

01 Feb 2012, 17-18:00 the editors Geoff Cox and Christian Ulrik Andersen (Centre for Digital Urban Living) will launch the newspaper at transmediale festival/Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.

Smart Aarhus and AU Energy / Smart Cities

Digital Urban Living is part of the launch of a big flagship initiative called "Smart Aarhus". Chaired by the Muncipality of Aarhus, Aarhus University, Central Denmark Region, The Alexandra Institute and industry partners have set out the formulate a comprehensive vision for the digital development of the City of Aarhus and it's surroundings.

Smart Aarhus will be launched Tuesday, January 24. There's a website <www.smartaarhus.dkwww.smartaarhus.dk>, FacebookFacebook page and TwitterTwitter stream if you want more info. An international website will also be available shortly.

The launch coincides with the announcement of Aarhus University's initiative AU ENERGY / SMART CITIES. This effort will coordinate smart city-related activites all across of Aarhus University in an effort to provide a comprehensive platform for tackling the challenges for radical digitization of cities and societies.

Ole Iversen contributes to BeArt

Professor and DUL researcher Ole Iversen recently contributed to the development of BeArt - a tool for disadvantaged young adults in Ribe art museum. Using iPads and QR codes the users are able to express themselves and create their own artwork. By involving the users in the design process the developers achieved a better understanding regarding needs and abilities of the target group. Read the full article herehere (in Danish).
